Changes are coming

Everything-Nikon's rules have been the same; ever since it started as a club 10 years ago. With it we have displaid some of the wonderful things that you photographers can achieve with a Nikon camera and a bit of light.
One of the biggest areas of contention with our rules have been with the level of editing we allow. For many, being able to see what can be achieved in preproduction without editing is what we are all about but it is causing an increasing number of photographers to feel that their art is not welcome here. Post processing has always been a big part of photography and now we want it to become a bigger part of Everything-Nikon.
To achieve this the rules will now read like this:

For translated rules please go: everything-nikon.deviantart.co… (Overarching rules still apply but need updating)

Everything-Nikon Rules

Once you are a member you can submit up to one image per week to any one of our galleries.
In an effort to improve the artistic quality of the group and offer some advice at the same time; we shall only publish deviations that meet certain all-encompassing requirements:

  • Must be shot with a Nikon camera.
  • Must have EXIF data intact or camera description in the image description.
  • A minimum size of 400×400 pixels.
  • Image taken from one photograph.
  • Good use of basic photographic technique (good composition, exposure, DoF, etc).
  • Certain types of "hate" art will not be accepted. Graphic depictions that debase women, or children, will not be accepted. This is a community of Nikon artists, and will not be used as a political or social statement platform.
  • Any other type of art not allowed on dA will not be accepted. Read here and here about the prohibited content on deviantART.
  • Some Individual folders have their own sub rules and omission on top of these rules:

    Everything-Nikon

    • Deviation made from a single image.
    • Minimal amount of computer intervention.

    Everything-Postprocessed

    • Image should not be a collage of many photographs.
    • Image should not be edited beyond the bounds that would make it a photomanpulation.
    • The image should still be recognizable to the original should it be requested.

    My Nikon Camera

    • Image may be captured with cameras other than Nikon.
    • Image must contain a Nikon or Nikkor branded product.
    • Editing of the image is acceptable where deemed appropriate.
    • Prose and poetry are also accepted in this folder where relevant.

By submitting your art through the deviantART GroupSystem, you are agreeing to have your art posted in the :groups:Everything-Nikon Galleries and that it will be displayed for viewing by our members as well as used in News Articles, on the feature gallery and our social media pages.

Should you be fortunate enough to have your art added to the feature gallery it will also be featured on our facebook and twitter pages.

So what does this mean?

Well for one we are going to change our submission folders instead of the current system of;
  • Feature
  • Monthly folder
  • My Nikon Camera.

To the new system of;
  • Feature - The best images submitted to our group chosen by our admins
  • Everything-Nikon - quarterly folder for minimaly edited imaged
  • Everything-Postprocessed - images with heavier editing
  • My Nikon Camera - feature your Nikon kit for the world to see

With this new folder system we hope to maintain the great quality we have come to know and love in our group in the Everything-Nikon gallery folder. With the addition of the Everything-Postprocessed we hope to make our fellow Nikonions who chose to edit their images more, feel welcome in this fantastic community.
The Feature and my Nikon Camera folders will remain the same as before allowing us to feature your best and for you to shar the kit you use.

What do I need to do

Keep doing what you do best. Shoot amazing photographs and share them on Deviant art.
When you want to share an image on :groups:Everything-Nikon you need to take care to chose the most relevant gallery folder to your image:
  • If your image meets the old group rules then submit it to the Everything-Nikon folder.
  • If you believe your image contains to much editing then submit it to the Everything-Postprocessed folder
  • Optionally if your image features a Nikon or Nikkor branded product in ti you can share it in the My Nikon Camera folder

Once you have submitted an image, the same process we have been using for the last few years will be used to audit your submissions.
One of our wonderful submission stuff will check that your image meets our submission rules and will either add it to the gallery folder or decline the image.
Should your image be declined, a message explaining why your image didn't meet the rules of  that folder will be sent to you. This will give you the opportunity to explain how achieved an effect without breaking the rules and that you are just simply amazing.
If it was a simple case of you just getting the wrong folder you can resubmit the following week. You can even resubmit the same image to a more appropriate folder or upload a version of the image with less editing should you wish.
Should your image be accptd all you need to do is sit back and reep the praise and awe showered on your amazibg work of art and good Nikon only photography group choice.
Please let us know what you think of the new rules and hallery style. We would love to hear your feedback.
Remember to stay active and remain an important part of the :groups:Everything-Nikon group comunity.
Happy New year from everyone at :groups:Everything-Nikon.

Your D750 suck

Well if you believe what the internet is saying about it, it does anyway.
Aparently this is due to some cameras exhibiting a strange flare  when shooting backlit subjects where the light source is slightly outside the upper frame.
In fact it appears that the D750 isn't the only frame showing this problem. as users report similar issues with other camera bodies from Nikon and Canon.
The problem, on the D750, seems to be caused by the AF sensor curtain itsn't fully covering the AF sensor on some of these cameras. Not all cameras are effected and it only happens with the light coming from outside the upper frame.
A bit of a big deal is being made of this but lets be honest it realy isn't one. You are being forced into a corner if you feel the need to shoot in these lighting conditions.
Nikon has released a statement on this subject where they say they are looking into the problem. This might not sound like much but Nikon don't tend to react to problems with their products this quickly so showing a bit of a change in attitude. You can read their full statement on their blog.

If you have been effected or not by this then please let us know about it.

How to suggest a DD

A Daily Deviation (DD) is a feature by Deviant art that aims to showcase and bring to the attention of fellow deviants, exceptional images.
To quote the dA FAQ:
The Daily Deviation (DD) is a daily feature chosen from the galleries here on deviantART.

A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.

This is all very good but did you know you you can help out with this process?
We asked 3wyl for her advice on what she looks for in a DD suggestion so we can better pick and share DD's.
Rememebr that each Staff  memver and volunteer will have different preferences so use this as a general guide and you aught not to go wrong.

Pick an image

You are unlikely to be strolling out there with the aim of looking for a daily deveation. It is more something you stumble over whilst whilst browsing the various groups and galleries of deviant art. You will know if it is right or not. The image could be of an extraudinary subject, be shot using fantastic technique and make you feel all kinds of emotions. It will deviate from the norm and showcase the endless possibilities of what can be achieved as an artist.
The long and short of it is that you will know that this image is worth celebrating.

Check they are elegable

Now you have found a wonderful image but did this artist produce another amazing image last week and recieve an DD for that?
Deveant art doesn't want to turn all of its focus onlt a few amazing artists, it wants to show case the fantastic work done by many individuals who otherwise may slip under the radar and go underapreciated.
So as a rule of thumb they wont give out a DD to an artist who has recieved another DD within the last 6 months or has several DD's already unless it is something exceptional. This isn't a set rule so again different site admins will have differnet views on this.
You can check for recent DD's by following the FAQ and clicking on their gallery, selecting ALL in the top left gallery options then at the bottom of the gallery you will see "See Also: DeviantsName daily deviations". Click this and you will see all of their recent daily deviations. Alternatively just add " /dds " to the end of their profile url so taking fellow Everything-Nikon group member GuillaumGibault as an example we type in the url guillaumgibault.deviantart.com… and we can see just their Daily Deviation. The date it was awarded is under the thumb nail and as its the 26/12/13 it is over 6 months ago so could be awarded another.

Tell the right person

Next up we need to tell the right person what we found. There are different Volunteers and staff for each area of deviant art and photography is split down further as it is a popular are of Deviant Art. An up to date list of volunteers and staff is in the DD FAQ. Pick the person that covers the gallery that your chosen image has been submitted, for exmple 3wyl is one of  the staff members covering general photography.

Send the staff member a note

Click the name of the correct volunter or staff member you chose above so you go to their profile page. Once there, hit "Send a Note" on the top right of their profile page. Note that there is a small chance that they might want an alternative meens of letting them know. They will more than likely have instructions in their sticky journal although I haven't seen this for a while.
You now need to tell them the following information:
  • that you are suggesting a DD.
  • link the image.
  • Explain why you think it is worthy of a DD.
  • *Optionally* tell them if they have recieved a DD before and if so when.

The first bit is easy. Just make the subject of your note "DD suggestion".
Simply copying and pasting the image URL is one way to link your chosen image but a better way of doing it is to use a thumb nail so they get a preview straight away.
You will find the thumb nail on the right bar of the image page under the Groups. Simply copy this text that will look like :thumb********: where the astrixes reprisent numbers and paste it into the note.
Alternatively you will see the string of numbers in the image URL. Simply write :thumb: into the note then copy these numbers and paste it after the word thumb leaving no spaces.
Now tell them why you think this image is worthy of a DD. Try to keep it short so they can easily use it in the banner. Tell them what is special about the image, how it makes you feel of what you think it reprisents.
Finally and as stated above, optionally let them know you have checked for recent DD's  and when the last one if any was. We say optionally as they check anyway but simply by checking you have saved both og your time by not suggesting an image that was not elegeable.
Even if you get half of this down you will have at the least raised this image to their attention and that is what this is all about.

If you want to learn more on this 3wyl wants us to know that there will be two week's worth of Community Volunteer/Daily Deviation articles in January in projecteducate, as a heads up. A lot of answers will be explained there.

How do I get a DD?

Well first you need to create an image that meets all of the criteria mentioned above then it needs to get seen by the right people. You can help this by sharing it in all of the right groups and getting seen.
You can't force these things, and its important not to loose sight f why you shared this image in the first place. To be seen by the people who will enjoy it, to get good feedback on your shooting style and to gain enjoyment from partaking in this community. To get an award for it that will gain you great exposure to the community at large can only be icing on this rather tasty cake.

In review of - How you process your RAW

Making your RAW images into usable files has turned into a pretty big subject. There is allot of software out there and you guys have tried allot of it and shared your experiences.
This journal is a great source of information and we we hope to maintain and keep for your reference.

  • Prows and poetry are also accepted in this folder where relevant.

I think by Prows you mean prose.

I'm guessing that english may not be your first language :D   Easy mistake to make :)
